2015 Language Legacies Grant:
Developing a Writing System for Idu Mishmi

The language of my people, the Idu Mishmis of the Mishmi Hills, is in the process of having its own writing system. Thanks to the Endangered Language Fund (ELF), my language will not be limited to oral transmission anymore. I take this opportunity to express our gratitude on behalf of the Idu Language Development Committee (ILDC) and Idu Mishmi community for all your care, consideration, aid and necessary guidance towards our effort to document the writing system of the Idu Mishmi language.

We are profoundly thankful to ELF for enabling us to do the only  documentation work in our community. We are very delighted that our humble beginning with your support will herald a new effort to revitalize our dialect, teach our coming generations and preserve it. With your funding we have been able to go places to collect special words and photographs with the help of local experts like the shaman, hunters and the village elders. We take pride in informing you that we have prepared a Draft Dictionary, the first of its kind for the Idu Mishmi language. Now we are hopeful that in a few years our work will lead to some positive changes such as dissemination of local dialect in primary schools and homes.

The ELF will always remain a part of our collective memory. We thank you and the ELF sincerely for being a part of our effort to save one the richest dialects on this part of the planet.

2014 Language Legacies Grant

Thank you very much for your support. I want to say, even outside of my pleasure about this good news, that I am glad that you all at ELF are doing the larger work you are doing. The more I have worked on this project, the more I have been convinced that there is a lot of knowledge to save in endangered languages. I hope I can help with some of that work, but I want to say again that I am glad you all are doing this work on a more sustained basis.

An Illustrated Nǀuu Language Reader for the ǂKhomani Community

The grant allowed me, together with community members, to produce a significant language teaching tool for the African language Nǀuu, which has only three known fluent speakers.

2014 Native Voices Endowment Grant:
Spokane Language Dictionary Second Edition

The funding we received from the Endangered Language Fund helped us to publish the Spokane Dictionary Second Edition, which is a tribute to the never-ending work Pauline Flett continues to do for the preservation and revitalization of the Spokane Salish Language. Thank you for awarding us the grant – the funding allowed us to create something that will be treasured for many generations.

2014 CoLang - Institute on Collaborative Research

The CoLang institute was amazing. I made so many contacts that I did not know even existed and I gained a lot of confidence in my own abilities and my purpose in studying linguistics. I benefited from learning about how to do even the simplest tasks such as file naming, archiving, and fundamentals about audio recording. I can't thank you enough for your support and this amazing opportunity that I still feel so grateful and thankful for.
